animal tessellation
Tessellations are motifs designed to fit together like puzzle pieces. Here we design a stamp with custom contours that, when repeated, completely and neatly covers a printed surface. You could print these in one color, but the motifs pop more if you use more than one ink. I printed these with a half-drop repeat and a brick repeat (as described on this page) to further differentiate the motifs from one another. Steps 1–5 are the instructions to design your own tessellation, but I have included two templates for your printing pleasure. Technically you could repeat steps 2–5 with all four sides of the stamp, but I find it easier to align for printing when there are two straight sides. The sides, clockwise starting from the top, are A, B, C, and D. These instructions are for a brick repeat. If you would like to do a half-drop repeat, simply draw vertical rather than horizontal lines for your printing grid. Skip to step 6 if you want to use the template provided.
Use these motifs to stamp on any surface you like! I just did these on large sketch paper so I could later cut it down for cards or use it as wrapping paper.
